Taking Care of Your Copper Vessel Sink
66A copper vessel sink is a beautiful investment to add to any bathroom. So, with that in mind, the same investment should be put into its care and maintenance. With a little elbow grease, some special cleaning products, and a little love too, your copper vessel sink will prove to stand the test of time!
Looking after the kitchen and maintaining the things in it is not a very easy thing. Many people choose copper sinks because they are extremely beautiful. They add to the aesthetic sense of your home and have become greatly popular in recent years. The main reason why most people choose copper is because it keeps away harmful bacteria and germs to a great extent. Many serious disease-causing elements are found in sinks in the home. Looking after those sinks and cleaning them correctly will contribute greatly to their durability and add to the hygiene of your home. Vessel sinks are more commonly found in bathrooms. The bathroom is obviously a place where bacteria breeds so you will have to be very diligent in keeping these or any sinks clean.
Copper vessel sinks have a tendency to change according to their immediate environment. Since the sink comes in constant contact with air and water, there is a chance that its original color might change. A process called oxidation occurs causing your sink to turn a darker shade of its original color. Some people do not mind the color change while some do not like it. If you belong to the latter group, you can use a special cream called Wrights Copper Cream. If your sink has a dark patina, then this product is not recommended since it leaves a kind of stain on such copper. It could also make your sink turn a dirty pink. The ordinary soap and water method is the most ideal for dark copper sinks.
Do not use chemicals and abrasive elements to clean your sink. Do not use harsh cleaning agents, acid based products, and do not scrub this metal. You can rinse the sink with plain water and pat it dry after each use. Whenever you are done using it for the day, you can wipe it dry with a clean cloth. However, if you live in an area where the water is hard, then you need to wipe it dry each time. Hard water reacts with copper and creates ugly spots on it. To prevent this from happening, you could try Renaissance Wax because it will protect your sink from the elements present in hard water. It will also keep the luster of copper intact.
Meanwhile, if you get a sink, which has a natural patina, then the maintenance level it requires is very low. A natural patina sink has a light caramel color. Therefore, if you don’t want to be bothered with getting a sink that requires constant maintenance, you could go for this kind. You can apply some wax and coat the sink to get a clean look. If you want your sink to get that antique look, you could mix some salt with ammonia and apply it on the sink. Leave it for half an hour and then wash it away with cold water. You should then dry the sink with a soft cloth and leave it that way.
Vessel sinks are not recommended for kitchen use because they are easily stained by food elements. Tomatoes, oranges and lemons are the common culprits. However, in a bathroom, a beautiful and unique vessel sink (cooper or not) is a great addition to any bathroom remodeling project.
